Marlin on the D8

D8 firmware, now with a choice of flavours

We've had quite a few people asking about getting Marlin running on the D8 over the past few weeks, so my colleague Cameron has come up with the goods for you all and is in the process of getting the code committed to the main Marlin release on GitHub.

We've run a number of prints with Marlin on the D8 over the past week and all of the main board functions are working sweet.  The only things not functioning correctly at the moment are the buzzer and USB comms LED, but these obviously aren't critical to the operation of the printer so we'll leave it up to you guys to tweak around with the code and get these working if you need them.

Please note that we won't be supporting Marlin as our main FW and will continue to ship the D8 boards with our 5DPrint Firmware.  This port of Marlin is simply to get all of you who want it up and running as quickly as possible.

As always, thanks to all for continuing to support our projects and please leave any questions/comments you have down below.

sorry Martin, D8 with 5DPrint Firmware, not the latest.

in fact I don't know if it's the fan or a setting on D8, thank you for your help.

I am pretty sure a fine tunning of a fan could seriously improve the fine detail printing.

It would seem that there's an issue with the latest 5DPrint + OctoPrint.
OctoPrint disconnects after this:
Send: N15 G1 F7800*117
Recv: rs 16 (command code missing): N3 T0*57
Changing monitoring state from 'Printing' to 'Error: Printer requested li...'

Message in a longer form:
"Printer requested line 16 but no sufficient history is available, can't resend"

Changing the firmware to latest Marlin fixed the issue.

Thanks for letting us know Mikk, our FW engineer will take a look at it.  Just to confirm, this was running v2_20_24 of the 5DPrint FW?  And was it on the D8 or PrintrBoard controller?

Does the jump of 11 in the shipped counter mean that whatever problem was identified on or around the end of March has been resolved? I sure hope so. I'm still patiently waiting for that packing status to change to shipped and my status to go from waiting to received.

Fingers crossed.

Same here, waiting on my LT.

Will the improvements in PLA be hardware fixes that mean we have to wait longer or software fixes that can be applied after it is delivered?

Update:
Mine WAS shipped in early April (I emailed and asked) even though it still says PACKING.

There's hope for you.

Martyn,
Any comment on usefulness of 5dprint firmware v2.20.40 that was recently released?

Reply by Martyn Kay

@Roy: It has the autotune (M303) feature added to it.  The feature's still a bit buggy at present and Cameron will be releasing a new version sometime in the coming week (that's why we haven't officially announced this version), but please try it out and let us know if you have success with it.

The wiki page has been updated with the new command.

Martin, sorry for not replying, didn't notice at girst. It was with the latest firmware available at the time using the D8 board.

Could one of you Makibox folks add IGES and STEP file formats (separate directories ideally) to the Opensource cad files in addition to the Solidworks files? I think that may generate more crowsourced solutions for the printer.

Also, is there any way someone could spend a few minutes to generate the hex file for a Printrboard for the latest Marlin release? If not, are there any configuration tips on compiling it ourselves?

thanks
